PocketMonitor PMT

The PocketMonitor (PMT) is a portable, easy-to-use power meter which has been developed specifically for use in everyday production environments. Key features are its compact and robust design and quick, straightforward use.

Thanks to the solid aluminium housing, the electronics are protected from knocks and damp. In its folded-up state, the absorber shields the operating controls from damage.

The microprocessor-based electronics measure the temperature of the absorber and calculate the power of the laser beam with a resolution of one watt. Thanks to the high resolution, measurements can be taken in a very wide power range with uniform accuracy.

The exact power or the temperature can be selected on the large 4½-place display . The built-in lithium cell provides the PocketMonitor with current for around 10,000 measurements.

In the field

Thanks to its compact design and simplicity of use, the PocketMonitor is used in environments where many laser beam sources are employed. Hence it is equally well suited to service engineers working for laser and machine manufacturers as it is to technicians in test facilities and laboratories. The portability of the device without any sort of internal connections is a decisive factor here.

Measurement methods

The PocketMonitor measures laser power according to the ballistic principle. In this method, an absorber is irradiated with laser radiation for a defined period (10 s/20 s).

Based on the warming and the known weight of the absorber after a thermalisation time, the irradiated power can be determined with a resolution lower than 1 W.

Measured beam parameters

Power of continuous wave lasers at:

  • wavelength: 800-1100 nm or 10.6 μm
  • Maximum laser power: 100 W - 12 kW (depending on model)
  • Measurement period: 10 s or 20 s, depending on power density

The various models

Five different absorber versions are available for various power ranges. The models PocketMonitor 70icu and 120icu with copper cone are suited to very high power densities.

Often the power density is just as important for the selection of the appropriate devices as the maximum power.

Models PMT 70icu and PMT 120icu have particularly high reserves. This means that even measurements of more than 5 kW/cm² at 5 kW laser power are possible.

Options
The PocketMonitor is available not only with a range of absorbers, but also in a special version with separate absorber. Connecting cables are available in the lengths 5, 10 and 15 m.

In addition, a version with a current loop interface (4 – 20 mA) and also an OEM version for direct mechanical integration onto processing optics are available.

The option of a calibration certificate completes the offering. Regular recalibration is recommended. All options are available for the entire absorber range, so that we offer a very flexible measuring device indeed in the PocketMonitor.
